Unraveling the Enigma of Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl)

Despite its extensive scientific lineage and numerous promising attributes, the puzzle remains: why aren’t hypochlorous acid (HOCl) – based disinfectants more widespread in commercial cleaning operations?1-3 A recent review article focusing on HOCl’s role as a disinfectant, intriguingly describes it as “exhibiting many coveted traits of an ideal disinfectant: user-friendly, cost-effective, safe, with swift action, and a wide spectrum of bactericidal and virucidal effects.”4,5 However, as with all matters, the devil resides in the particulars. In this blog, I shall meticulously dissect these intricacies by addressing the following inquiries:

What exactly is HOCl?

How are HOCl-based solutions manufactured and distributed? Which HOCl-based solution best suits your requirements?

HOCl, a feeble acid, emerges when chlorine (a gaseous element) dissolves in water. Employed as an active component in sanitizers and disinfectants, HOCl has the remarkable ability to rupture cell membranes, akin to the mechanism of sodium hypochlorite (bleach) or hydrogen peroxide. The pH of water-based HOCl solutions typically lies within the neutral to slightly acidic range. HOCl boasts an array of alternative appellations (albeit not all technically accurate), including “electrolyzed water,” “activated water,” “enhanced water,” “superoxidized water,” and perhaps misleading to some, “no-chemical” (for everything, even water, is a chemical!).

Astoundingly effective even in minute concentrations, HOCl displays tremendous potency against bacteria, viruses, and even proteinaceous allergens, outperforming higher pH bleach-based products. Despite its potent prowess, HOCl remains gentle on surfaces, and when unadulterated by additional ingredients such as surfactants or detergents, HOCl solutions leave behind minimal residue. This is exemplified by HOCl-based products approved by the EPA as food contact sanitizers, which require no rinsing when used on surfaces in contact with food.

The Genesis and Dispensation of HOCl-Based Solutions

HOCl-based solutions are fashioned and marketed through three primary means:

  1. Ready to Use (RTU) products are typically produced by adjusting the pH of a sodium hypochlorite (bleach) solution during manufacturing. To accomplish this, a basic (alkaline) solution of sodium hypochlorite is neutralized by the addition of a pH-adjusting agent.
  2. Onsite generation systems entail the application of electricity to a brine of salt and water. This process involves the addition of salt (sometimes referred to as a “precursor”) to water before the application of electricity.
  3. Tablet products can also generate HOCl solutions on-site. Sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC or SDIC), a colorless, water-soluble solid, produces HOCl upon dissolution in water.

Unraveling the Optimal HOCl-Based Solution for Your Needs

As with any product, HOCl-based solutions come with their own set of pros and cons, and this holds true for the three common types. While all HOCl-based solutions offer enticing advantages in terms of safety and surface compatibility, there are certain caveats to be mindful of. Below is a table outlining the distinctions among the three types of HOCl-based solutions, accompanied by a series of questions to aid in evaluating any HOCl-based product before purchase.

ProsCons
Ready to Use (RTU)• Favorable safety profile
• Extended shelf life (generally 1 year)
• Assured concentration, micro-efficacy, and no upfront device costs
• Minimal contamination risk
• No bottles to clean
• Higher price per bottle
• Non-reusable bottles
On-site generated• Favorable safety profile
• Produce only as much as required
• Lower cost per ounce (after system purchase)
• Shorter shelf life (days to weeks)
• Upfront system cost
• System maintenance cost
• Additional steps for end-users
• Bottles require cleaning between uses
• Unassured concentration and efficacy
Tablet• Favorable safety profile (of final solution)
• Lower shipping costs (no liquid)
• Requires less storage space
• Long shelf life (of tablet)
• No upfront device cost
• Longer contact times
• Shorter shelf life when in solution (days to weeks)
• Toxicity in concentrated tablet form (requires gloves and goggles when dissolving)
• Dissolution time required
• Bottles or dissolving containers need cleaning between uses
• Additional steps for end-users

Key Questions to Assess All HOCl-Based Solutions:

  1. Is it EPA-registered? RTU and tablets should bear an EPA registration number on the product label. Onsite generation systems may not have EPA registration numbers since the HOCl-based solution is produced after the product is sold. It is important not to confuse EPA establishment numbers with EPA registration numbers, as they are distinct.6
  2. Does it disinfect and/or sanitize? Disinfectants are EPA registered to eradicate illness-causing bacteria, viruses, and sometimes fungi, while sanitizers are EPA registered specifically against illness-causing bacteria.
  3. What is the contact time? While shorter contact times are generally preferred, longer durations may be acceptable in certain scenarios. Properly accounting for contact times in your processes ensures minimal downtime for cleaners while the product effectively acts. For situations where HOCl solutions do not require rinsing, longer contact times may be permissible without compromising cleaning speed.
  4. Does it contain a surfactant (also known as detergent)? While many HOCl products on the market are free of surfactants, some do include them. Surfactant-free products are ideal for routine, preventative cleaning and disinfecting, but for more challenging cleaning tasks before disinfection, a separate product containing surfactants may be necessary. Solutions with surfactants are more likely to leave behind residue requiring wiping.
  5. Is it safe for use with an electrostatic sprayer? Not all HOCl-based solutions have EPA approval for use with electrostatic sprayers, meaning their safety and microbial efficacy have not been verified for this application. Always refer to the product’s master label before utilizing electrostatic applicator technology with HOCl-based solutions.
  6. Is it deemed food-contact safe? Food-contact safe HOCl solutions do not necessitate rinsing or wiping after use, saving time and providing peace of mind to building occupants and management. Again, consult the EPA master label to confirm the recommended usage directions. Incorporating the pros and cons list and answering the above questions can help narrow down the best HOCl-based solution for your specific needs. However, bear in mind this crucial implementation tip: Begin with small-scale implementation of any new product (testing it with one crew, in one area, for a predetermined duration) and refrain from making further changes until sufficient evidence supports its benefits to your organization. Changes, even if positive, require time to take root.

Understanding HOCl: The Science Behind It

Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) is a naturally occurring substance with potent antimicrobial properties. It is produced by the human body’s white blood cells to combat harmful pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and fungi. HOCl is well-known for its ability to neutralize a wide range of microorganisms effectively.

HOCl vs. COVID-19: The Battle Unfolds

The COVID-19 virus, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has become a global health crisis, leading to countless infections and fatalities. But how does HOCl act against this formidable adversary?

1. Disruption of the Virus’ Structure

Upon contact with the COVID-19 virus, HOCl penetrates the viral envelope, leading to the disruption of its outer lipid layer. This layer is crucial for the virus’s survival, as it enables the virus to infect human cells. By breaking down this protective barrier, HOCl renders the virus unable to infect host cells, effectively neutralizing its threat.

2. Inactivation of Viral Proteins

HOCl’s remarkable ability to oxidize and inactivate viral proteins is a key factor in its effectiveness against COVID-19. The viral proteins play crucial roles in the replication and infectivity of the virus. By targeting and neutralizing these proteins, HOCl halts the virus’s ability to spread and cause further damage.

While there is no known cure for psoriasis, there are several natural remedies such as our HOCl-based solution that can help manage the symptoms and provide relief. In this article, we will explore various natural remedies for psoriasis and how they can be incorporated into a holistic approach to managing this condition.

Introduction

Psoriasis can be a challenging condition to manage, but with the right approach, it is possible to reduce symptoms and improve overall well-being. Many individuals with psoriasis have found relief through natural remedies that focus on supporting the body’s healing mechanisms and reducing inflammation.

Understanding Psoriasis

Before delving into natural remedies, it is essential to have a basic understanding of psoriasis. Psoriasis occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells, causing them to multiply rapidly. This rapid cell turnover results in the formation of thickened patches on the skin’s surface, accompanied by itching, redness, and scaling.

Diet and Nutrition

A healthy diet plays a vital role in managing psoriasis symptoms. Incorporating anti-inflammatory foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, can help reduce inflammation and support overall skin health. Herbal Remedies

Various herbal remedies have shown promise in managing psoriasis symptoms. Herbal extracts like chamomile, turmeric, and Oregon grape can help reduce inflammation and relieve itching. However, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before using herbal remedies, as they can interact with medications or cause allergic reactions.

Aloe Vera and Coconut Oil

Aloe vera and coconut oil are natural moisturizers that can provide soothing relief for dry, itchy skin. Aloe vera’s anti-inflammatory properties help reduce redness and inflammation, while coconut oil locks in moisture and promotes skin healing. Applying these remedies topically can help alleviate discomfort and improve the appearance of psoriasis plaques.

Dead Sea Salt Baths

Bathing in Dead Sea salt-infused water has been a popular remedy for psoriasis for centuries. The unique composition of minerals in Dead Sea salt, such as magnesium and potassium, can help reduce inflammation, exfoliate dead skin cells, and soothe itchiness. Regular salt baths can be a relaxing and therapeutic addition to a psoriasis management routine.

Sunlight and Vitamin D

Exposure to natural sunlight can have a positive impact on psoriasis symptoms. Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, which plays a crucial role in regulating immune system function and skin health. Spending a short time outdoors, preferably during non-peak hours, can help improve symptoms. However, it is important to protect the skin by applying sunscreen and avoiding excessive sun exposure.

Stress Management

Stress is known to trigger or worsen psoriasis flare-ups. Engaging in stress management techniques, such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in hobbies, can help reduce stress levels and improve overall well-being. Finding healthy outlets to cope with stress is crucial for managing psoriasis effectively.

Mind-Body Therapies

Mind-body therapies, such as acupuncture, hypnosis, and guided imagery, can complement conventional treatments for psoriasis. These therapies aim to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and rebalance the body’s energy. While more research is needed to fully understand their effectiveness, many individuals have reported positive outcomes when incorporating mind-body techniques into their psoriasis management routine.

Exercise and Physical Activity

Regular exercise offers numerous benefits for individuals with psoriasis. Physical activity helps improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being. Engaging in activities such as walking, swimming, yoga, or strength training can not only alleviate psoriasis symptoms but also improve mental health and boost self-esteem.

Avoiding Triggers

Identifying and avoiding triggers that worsen psoriasis symptoms is crucial for effective management. Common triggers include stress, certain medications, infections, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Keeping a symptom diary can help identify patterns and pinpoint triggers, allowing individuals to make informed lifestyle choices and minimize flare-ups.

Unveiling the Might of Hypochlorous Acid

You should know about hypochlorous acid. Hypochlorous acid, or HOCl for short, is a weak acid boasting potent antimicrobial properties and is recognized for its disinfectant abilities. With disinfectant strength comparable to bleach, this substance plays a crucial role in surface cleaners, pool treatments, and facial cleansers. Impressively, it also appears in skincare products.

Understanding Hypochlorous Acid’s Skincare Potential

Before you consider applying household bleach to your face, hold that thought. Cosmetic chemist Ginger King clarifies that the hypochlorous acid found in surface cleaners differs significantly from that in facial mists. For safe usage on the skin, it must be diluted, a process undertaken by ThinkSmarter Products during product development to ensure consumer safety.

When correctly diluted, hypochlorous acid becomes a formidable bacteria combatant while remaining gentle on even the most sensitive skin. Experts recommend using hypochlorous acid-infused products to address common bacterial skin concerns such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Notably, it disinfects the skin, reducing inflammation and accelerating the natural healing process.

Embracing Nature’s Defense Mechanism

Interestingly, your body produces hypochlorous acid naturally through white blood cells to fend off infections and bacteria. Whenever you experience a cut or scrape, hypochlorous acid kicks in to keep harmful germs at bay. It’s an all-natural solution!

Scientists have managed to harness the power of hypochlorous acid in recent years. This innovation has paved the way for products like ThinkSmarter Products’ all-purpose cleanser, which capitalizes on the healing potential of hypochlorous acid.

Embracing Hypochlorous Acid in Your Skincare Routine

As hypochlorous acid is already a part of your body’s defense mechanism, products formulated with it are entirely safe for everyday use. Unlike prescription antibiotics, your body does not develop resistance to hypochlorous acid, making it a long-term solution. Furthermore, it won’t cause skin dryness like alcohol or benzoyl peroxide.

HOCl-based products can even hydrate the skin while combating bacteria. With hypochlorous acid as a primary ingredient, this mist helps absorb excess oils, cleanse, and hydrate the skin simultaneously.

Safely Enjoying Hypochlorous Acid

While hypochlorous acid-infused skincare products are safe for most users, they must be correctly formulated and intended for skin use. Attempting to dilute hypochlorous acid yourself or using non-skincare products can lead to chemical burns. Always opt for products labeled for skincare and follow their usage directions.

To avoid irritation, especially for sensitive skin, choose fragrance-free products like Curative Bay’s Advanced Hypochlorous Acid Skin Spray, renowned for its purity. Additionally, hypochlorous acid can be an ally in combating signs of aging, soothing fine lines and wrinkles.

Incorporating Hypochlorous Acid into Your Routine

Hypochlorous acid can be found in cleansers, serums, creams, and sprays. One of the most common and convenient ways to apply it is through sprays. After cleansing, spritz a thin layer of the product across your face, follow your skincare routine, and finish with a moisturizer.

Moreover, hypochlorous acid-infused products extend beyond your regular routine. They can serve as a spot treatment for acne, provide relief for sunburn, or even function as a quick hand sanitizer.

Embrace the Natural Power of Hypochlorous Acid

To sum it up, hypochlorous acid stands as your skin’s natural disinfectant. Harness its potential to combat various skin concerns and maintain a clean, clear, and hydrated complexion. Embrace the wonders of this naturally occurring ingredient, and let your skin experience the healing energy of hypochlorous acid.
